Rhode Island Hospital left drill bit in patient's skull

Posted on Tuesday, November 16th, 2010 at 3:54 pm

A Rhode Island Hospital has been fined $300,000 after  the operating room staff left a broken drill bit inside of a patient’s skull after surgery.

This is the third fine that this hospital has had since 2007. One instance occurred when a surgeon operated on the wrong side of a patient’s brain and again in November 2009 when more mistakes were made.

A video camera was also ordered to be installed in the operating room after this offense. The CEO of the hospital has said that these mistakes are unacceptable and that he has hired a team to review all procedures.
