Costa cruise captain solely responsible for grounding

The massive Costa Concordia cruise ship was grounded last Friday near Giglio, Italy when the captain made a fatal error in navigating the liner.
The captain chose to steer the ship near the shore without knowing a reef was protruding from the water. The reef created a 160-foot gash in the ship, which caused the liner to tilt on it’s side. The captain abandoned ship before all passengers were able to evacuate and thus was arrested. He is being charged with several felonies, including manslaughter and abandoning ship.
His reckless maneuvering of the ship left 11 people dead as of current and 21 people are still missing. Rescue missions were halted over the weekend due to harsh weather and were recently resumed Wednesday morning.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to the victims’ family and friends during this difficult time.
