On October 28, 2011 around 11 p.m. at night, a 54-year-old man was struck by two separate motor vehicles and left in the middle of the street. He ultimately died from his injuries.
The man had just been dropped off by a transit bus, and was in the process of crossing the street when he was hit by the first car. The car was being driven by a 19-year-old college sophomore. She did not stop and help the man, and turned herself into police five days after the accident. There is reason to believe that she had been drinking before getting behind the wheel.
As the man lay injured on the street, a second vehicle approached and ran him over again. The 52-year-old driver continued on the road. She was arrested by police a week after the incident. Both drivers are facing charges of causing death with an automobile, and fleeing the scene of a crime.
Family members of the victim have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against both women in the case. They also have plans to sue the NJ Transit company for not securing a safe bus stop.
